Another page on the sports calendar has flipped, and once again it is time for a great Kansas City tradition.The Mineral Bowl returns to the area with a matchup between the Augustana College Vikings (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and the Missouri Western Griffons. The game is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tiger Stadium, U.S. 69 and Wornall Road in Excelsior Springs.

There's local interest in the NFL steroids policy controversy besides Vikings Pro Bowl defensive linemen Pat Williams and Kevin Williams. The person who oversees the NFL Players Association's policy on steroids and substance abuse is Stacy Robinson, a former St. Paul Central wide receiver who went on to play for two Super Bowl championship teams with the New York Giants.

Head coach Todd Dagenais made his presence known in 2008, taking the UCF volleyball team from down and out in 2007 to a worthy competitor in his first season with the Knights. The Black and Gold posted a 15-17 overall record, its best mark since 2003, and matched its best Conference USA record, going 6-10 in the fifth-toughest volleyball conference in the nation.
